National Service Scheme (NSS)

The College NSS has three units under the University of Madras. 300 volunteers from the undergraduate programmes actively participate in various social service activities. They participate in rallies, seminars, camps, and awareness programmes on Aids, Social evils, Domestic violence, Gender issues, Diabetes, Road safety, Environment etc. Annual activities of the units include a personality development workshop for the volunteers at the beginning of each academic year. On 28 and 29August 2009 the workshop titled "Sikaratthai Nookki" was organized for the volunteers.

Dr. Kauslaya Moorthy and Justice M.N. Moorthy endowments sponsoring blood donation camp was conducted on August 3rd 2009. 180 units of blood were donated to the Lions Blood Bank. This is an annual feature, last academic year on 24 March 2009 the response for blood donation was overwhelming and in a day, over 250 units were collected on the college premises. Apart from this, blood donations camps in association with Lions Blood bank are also conducted.

As part of the NSS annual activities, Special Camp in rural areas are organized. From 2004 to 2007, Kosapur in Thiruvalluvar district was adopted. The NSS volunteers built a 640 ft compound wall around the Elementary School in the village. That has improved the admissions and reduced dropouts.

In 2007-08, Gnayiru village, and in 2008-09, Kanniyampalayam, in Thiruvalluvar district were selected for the Special Camp. During the ten day camp at the village, NSS volunteers brought various services to the residents. Ways of preparing simple handicrafts were taught to children; women were informed about self-help groups and its benefits. The volunteers also conducted a survey on the socio-economic conditions of the residents. An eye camp, a veterinary camp and health awarness programme was organized.

The unit helps to build self-confidence and sensitizes its members to the society around them.
